Compassion for the “T” Community

Submitted by Ann Castiglione

Pope Francis has adopted a more conciliatory tone toward the LGBTQ+ community than any of his predecessors. “…who am I to judge …?” He has included LGBTQ people at his luncheons, met with some privately, asked families to love them and encouraged countries to decriminalize homosexuality. While church teaching has not changed, Pope Francis has opened the door to compassion.

I personally believe the “T” in LGBTQ are the least understood and most in need of compassion. Even some in the LGBTQ community do not understand. I have adapted the statement below from Dignity USA because I think it is beautifully written and certainly articulates how I feel. I encourage you to think about it:

Our transgender and nonbinary community members are beloved by God for God’s love is big. They, like all God’s children, have unique gifts. This “T” community is increasingly faced with violence and criticism for their identities and experiences. We should welcome this community and encourage others to not judge them.
