St. Basil the Great’s Call to Action

Submitted by Joan Plumley

On January 2 the Church celebrated the feast of St. Basil the Great (330-379). He was a bishop and Doctor of the Church. The rule for his monastery emphasized community. The message he preached went beyond charity and advocated for social justice. He said, “Are you a robber? Those riches you have hoarded are the riches of the poor.”

St. Basil’s words apply to us today. The systemic racism in our society has resulted in relegating many people of color to a life of poverty.

Question: How have my actions and society’s actions robbed human beings of their basic needs and dignity? To find out what you can do, contact Joan Plumley: joanmplumley@gmail.com
