Imagine being a black family looking for a house in Milwaukee County and facing the language, “whites only or no colored allowed” in the housing deeds. This combined discriminatory collaboration (1910-60s) by the

government, real estate companies

and banks kept the Black population squeezed into a small section of the city that proved inadequate.

Knowing this history led UWM professors, Derek Handley and Anne Bonds to spearhead a project called “Mapping Racism and Resistance,” using citizen scientists to document and map out restrictive property covenants in Milwaukee County.

Now, Bonds and Handley have scheduled an event to give updates on the project.
